In 2002, the Oxleas N.H.S. Foundation Trust approached Centrepieces artists to put forward ideas for a public sculpture portraying health and recovery.

An executive committee selected the drawing by group Artist Kim Campbell
Kim had been exploring spiral forms and positive ideas about recovery.
After several months studying a way of constructing the spiral and a failed attempt to build the structure from wooden posts, the team managed to put together a nine foot high skeleton structure

Living Sculpture
After the structure was covered in fiberglass, many concerns and discussions about the finishing quality of the sculpture surged.
The team tried different approaches, including using pebbles and leaves. In the end, a mix of living plants were selected and the addition of sticks a few years later provided texture and kept the organic nature of the sculpture.
The Emotional Spiral still lives in the Pinewood House and Centrepieces has plans to revitalise it in the future.
The bumpy road traveled to achieve the sculpture and its ongoing ever changing nature reflects flawlessly its name and what it represents, The Emotional Spiral.
